Half-Lieutenant Marsh’k Kluss’ta was not a happy man. He did not believe he deserved to be happy. He did not believe he deserved to be fair. He did not believe he deserved to be treated like an equal to the rest of the crew.

The only reason he did not want to be miserable was because it made things difficult for him and his plans. When facing unexpected adversity, he did what he could to maintain his composure and keep his plans intact, but it did little good and did even less good for those around him. The way this quote is written is completely different from the way it is actually said, however it would still make sense in context without changing anything.
